These are the main types of diabetes:
* Prediabetes: Usually the early stage of Type 2.
* Type 1: May account for 5% to 10% of all diagnosed cases. About half of all cases of Type 1 appear in childhood or in the early teenage years. With Type 1, the pancreas makes little or no insulin.
* Type 2: Usually the result of poor diet, lack of exercise and being overweight. With Type 2, the pancreas is still producing insulin but not enough to properly metabolize glucose.
* Gestational: Occurs during pregnancy when the woman has difficulty digesting carbohydrates. Gynecologists usually test for this condition on pregnant women during the first trimester.
